What C-21 means on your Dacor range (dacor range c-21)
Dacor range c-21 is a runaway-heat safety shutdown for the oven cavity: the main PBA has read the oven at an abnormally high internal temperature relative to what the current cycle called for, and cuts heating in response. This affects only the oven beneath the cooktop; the cooktop burners run on separate ignition and gas-valve hardware and are not part of this code’s monitoring path. As with any runaway-heat code, Dacor documents this as one to stop using the oven for rather than reset and continue.
Symptoms
The list below is how C-21 announces itself on a Dacor range, and how it differs from the range problems people confuse it with.
- C-21 appears and the oven immediately halts heating, sometimes with an audible relay click.
- The oven cavity may feel unusually hot to the touch near the door, beyond what the set temperature would produce.
- A hot-metal or faint burning smell can accompany the first occurrence.
- The problem can appear during a long unattended cook, such as roasting or slow-cooking.
- Restarting a cycle after c-21 can trip the same problem again quickly if the underlying cause has not cleared.
Common causes
Each cause below can produce C-21 on a range, and only measurement on the range itself will tell you which one you actually have.
- Relay stuck closed on the main PBA — the switching relay for the oven heating element has failed in the “on” position.
- Failed or drifting oven sensor — the sensor is under-reporting cavity temperature, so heating continues past the safe point.
- Heating element failure — a degraded oven element can behave unpredictably under the main PBA’s control.
- Door seal failure — a significantly compromised oven door gasket can let heat concentrate unexpectedly near the sensor location.
- Main PBA control failure — the board itself failing to respond to sensor input, rather than the sensor or relay being responsible.
Troubleshooting steps you can try
Go down the list on your range and stop at the first step that makes you uneasy — a Dacor range is not worth an injury.
- Turn the range off and cut power at the breaker immediately — do not leave a unit that has thrown c-21 running or unattended.
- Allow the oven cavity to cool fully before opening the door, and avoid touching the back panel.
- Do not restart a cook cycle to test whether the problem repeats — a stuck relay will not release itself.
- Check the oven door seal for obvious damage or gaps once the range is cool and safe to inspect.
- Keep the range unplugged or the breaker off until a technician has confirmed the relay and sensor.
