If you are wondering how to defrost a Dacor freezer, the first thing to know is that a Dacor column freezer defrosts itself: it runs an automatic defrost cycle that briefly warms the evaporator coil to clear the thin layer of frost that forms in normal use, so a routine manual defrost is not part of its schedule. A manual defrost is for the case where frost has built up heavily on the interior walls, and the safe way to do it is to unplug the freezer, empty it, leave the door open and let it melt fully and without hurry. Heavy frost that returns within days is a symptom of a fault, not something a defrost will cure for good.
Does a Dacor freezer need to be defrosted?
Not on a schedule. Dacor’s column freezers in the current 18 to 36 inch lineup run an automatic defrost cycle, and our maintenance guide for them describes what it looks like: the interior may read slightly warmer than usual for a short time, and you may hear a faint dripping or gurgling sound. That is normal and resolves within the cycle’s normal duration without any action from you. Light frost on the evaporator surfaces is normal too. What is not normal is thick frost coating the interior walls, shelves or bins that are hard to pull out, or a cabinet that is drifting warm. Only then is a manual defrost worth doing, and our page on the Dacor freezer maintenance schedule covers the routine upkeep.
When should you defrost by hand?
When frost is heavy and the door seal is the first suspect. Our page on a freezer with heavy frost on the interior walls says to manually defrost if frost is heavy, unplugging and allowing a full, unhurried melt, to move the contents to another freezer if possible and to watch how fast the frost returns. Before you start, check the door gasket for gaps and for anything in a door bin holding it open, because a door that looks closed but is not sealing builds ice within days. A defrost resets the situation: if the frost comes back thickly within days, the heater, the thermostat or the defrost control probably needs a technician, and the defrost has only shown you that.
How do you defrost a Dacor column freezer step by step?
Plan the job for a time when you can leave the freezer open for as long as it takes. First, move the food into another freezer or into coolers packed with ice, and keep the coolers closed. Second, if your model has an ice maker, follow the owner’s manual to turn it off and close its water supply, because the manual’s steps differ by model. Third, unplug the freezer or switch off its breaker, and leave the door open. Fourth, lay thick towels on the floor and at the base of the cabinet to catch the meltwater, and keep a tray of towels ready to replace when they soak through. Fifth, let the ice melt completely without hurry. Do not chip at it, do not use a knife, scraper or ice pick, and do not use a hair dryer, heater or boiling water to speed it up, since a sharp tool can puncture the coil and a heat source can warp plastic parts. Lift out loose ice as it comes free by hand.
How do you deep clean it afterward?
Once all the ice has melted and the water is mopped up, remove the shelves and bins if they lift out, and wash them by hand with mild soap and warm water. Wipe the interior walls and the door gasket with a soft cloth and the same solution, and rinse with a cloth dampened with clean water. Dry everything thoroughly, including the groove of the gasket, because moisture left behind freezes into new frost. Avoid harsh abrasives and strong solvents on the interior and on the panel-ready door front, and check your owner’s manual for the cleaners it recommends. The gasket deserves a close look: wipe off spills and residue, which are what stop it from sealing. If a stainless or panel-ready surface needs cleaning, follow the manual for that finish.

How do you restart the freezer and restock it?
Put the shelves and bins back, close the door, plug the freezer in or switch the breaker back on and let it run until it has reached its set temperature before you restock. Your owner’s manual gives the settings and the wait. Then return the food in an orderly way, frozen items first, and avoid packing it so tightly that air cannot move. Turn the ice maker and its water supply back on following the manual, if you turned them off. Open the door as little as you can for the first day. If your model reports through the SmartThings app, check the app, and book a technician if an Abnormally High Temperature alarm persists once the cabinet has had time to cool. Our page on the Dacor freezer abnormally high temperature alarm explains it.
How long will food stay safe while the freezer is off?
Per FDA guidance, a full freezer will hold its temperature for about 48 hours with the door closed, and a half-full freezer about 24 hours, and a defrost with the door open uses that time up faster. That is why moving the food first matters. Food that still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below can usually be refrozen or cooked, and anything that has been warmer than 40°F for two hours or more should be thrown away. If you have lost power and not planned a defrost, see our guide to recovering Dacor appliances after a power outage.
When should you call a technician instead?
Call if heavy frost returns within days of a defrost, if the freezer is warm with a clean gasket, if you smell burning or if the compressor area is wet. Do not take off the back or lower panel. Our Dacor freezer repair tips list the three checks to do first, and our Dacor freezer repair page explains the visit.
