A water-presence sensor confirms whether water is physically present at a given point in the wash system — checking conductivity to detect whether the tub has actually filled, whether it has actually drained, and, on some readings, water turbidity and temperature as well. The controller relies on this sensor rather than a fixed timer, which is more accurate but also means a problem in the sensor itself, not just the water system, can trigger an error code.
How WPS ties directly to two documented error codes
F-1 on the EDW/IDW platform means that following a fill, the controller looked for conductivity — water actually present — via WPS and did not find it, signaling a water-valve or related system problem. F-9 is more direct still: it flags the WPS sensor itself, described in the service manual as a water-presence, turbidity, and temperature sensor failure. Distinguishing F-1 from F-9 matters, since F-1 points toward the water-delivery system while F-9 points toward the sensor component itself — two different repairs that can look similar from the error code alone.
Why this matters specifically for Legacy machines
This WPS architecture is a Legacy-era design, tied to the EDW/IDW platform that predates the Samsung acquisition. Samsung-era Modernist dishwashers run an entirely different code family — LC, 4C, 5C, HC, 3C, PC, AP — and do not use this WPS terminology or error-code numbering at all. If your dishwasher is showing an F-1 through F-9 dash-format code, it is a Legacy unit running this WPS-based system; if it shows a letter-suffix code instead, WPS does not apply.
What to check before assuming a sensor failure
Because F-1 can stem from the water-delivery side rather than the sensor itself, checking the water supply valve and inlet line for a simple blockage or closed shutoff is worth doing before assuming the WPS sensor has failed outright — an error code that looks like a sensor problem sometimes has a much simpler, non-electronic cause upstream of it.
