Who makes Dacor appliances? The short answer is that Dacor is a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics America, and it still sells its own product line under its own name. The longer answer depends on what you mean by “makes”: the brand, the control electronics and the factory that assembled your particular appliance are three different questions, and this site documents the first two but not the third. This guide separates them, and then shows how to use the model number in front of you to work out what you actually own.

Who owns the Dacor brand?

Samsung Electronics America owns it. Our Dacor legacy and Samsung-era repair guide records that the agreement was announced in August 2016 and the sale closed the following month, and that Samsung stated Dacor would maintain its own brand and identity. The company itself began in Pasadena, California, in 1965, which is why Dacor is still described as a genuine American brand rather than a house label. Ownership is a statement about the company. It does not say who assembled any single oven, cooktop or refrigerator, and we do not stretch it to say so.

What does “makes” mean for the electronics?

Here the site has something concrete to say. The legacy guide points out that the electronics under current Dacor appliances are built on Samsung platforms, and that the older pre-2016 control platforms and the current ones were built by different engineering teams on different hardware. The visible consequence is that the two groups share no error codes. Samsung-era dishwashers, for instance, use code strings such as 4C and 5C, which match Samsung’s own published dishwasher codes, while legacy dishwashers use an F-1 to F-9 family. That is a statement about control platforms. It is not a claim that Samsung builds the whole appliance, and it does not tell you where the cabinet, the burners or the glass came from.

The rating plate and owner's manual are the places to check for model details.

Where was my Dacor built?

This site does not say where individual Dacor models are assembled, and we will not guess. The reliable sources are the rating plate on the appliance, your owner’s manual and the specification sheet for your exact model. If country of origin matters to a purchase, check those before you buy and ask the seller to show you the plate.

How does the model number show which Dacor you have?

The prefix is the quickest practical answer to “which Dacor is this?” Our how to read a Dacor model number guide says Dacor has never published an official decode key, but that two things do decode reliably. The first is the prefix, which identifies the appliance category. The second is the number right after it, which is the nominal size in inches. On that page, DOP and DOB are wall ovens, DTI and DTG are induction and gas cooktops, DDW is a dishwasher, DHD is a range hood, DMR is a drawer microwave, DRF is a French-door refrigerator, DRR is a column refrigerator, DRZ is a column freezer and DRW is a wine column. So an induction cooktop with a 36 after its prefix is a 36-inch unit, and a dishwasher with a 24 is a 24-inch one.

The prefix also separates the two generations. Our which generation of Dacor do you have guide says a wall oven or range beginning DOB, DOP, DOC, DTI or DTG is a Samsung-era unit, and a dishwasher beginning DDW is Samsung-era too. A range numbered ER30D, ER36D or ER48D, or a dishwasher numbered EDW or IDW, is a Legacy unit. Use the model prefix first. Beyond the size number and the hinge-and-panel suffixes LAP and RAP on panel-ready refrigeration, treat any claim about what a particular letter means as inference rather than fact, and never order a part on a guessed decode.

Why do the styling and collection names mislead?

Looks and names are poor guides to the generation. The current Modernist generation comes in Contemporary, Transitional and Professional styles, which our Dacor style names glossary describes as design and hardware choices rather than different electronics. Heritage is a real, now-archived Dacor collection with H-prefix model numbers, and our Heritage is a collection, not a generation guide explains that some Heritage-badged products were sold into the Samsung era behind classic-styled cabinetry. A classic-looking range can therefore have either kind of control board, and only the model and serial number settle which.

Does the Samsung connection show up in daily use?

On current appliances, yes, through connectivity. Our SmartThings on Dacor glossary says Samsung shipped a dedicated Dacor iQ remote-control app update in March 2017, roughly six months after the sale closed. On refrigerators, freezers, column units and the wine column, the connection delivers four named alarms documented in each unit’s manual: Self Check, Abnormally High Temperature, Door Open and Filter Replacement. They are plain-language alerts, not error codes, and a unit that shows offline in the app describes a Wi-Fi problem, not a cooling problem. If you own refrigeration, our Dacor refrigerator SmartThings tips guide covers the alarms in more detail.

What should you do with this information?

Write down the full model number and serial number exactly as printed on the rating plate, and photograph the plate. When you book service, give both numbers, because a technician needs the real generation to know which control board and which code table apply. Reading a code against the wrong generation’s table is the quickest way to misdiagnose a Dacor. If you are shopping for a column refrigerator, our buying a Dacor column refrigerator guide covers the models. We are an independent service and not Dacor or Samsung, so for warranty terms and current product details go to the manufacturer. For a problem with the appliance itself, our Dacor refrigerator repair page explains how a visit works. Do not remove panels or work on wiring, gas parts or the sealed cooling system yourself; that is a technician’s job.

Frequently asked questions
Is Dacor owned by Samsung?
Yes. Samsung Electronics America announced its agreement to acquire Dacor in August 2016 and the sale closed the following month. Dacor still sells its own product line under its own name.
Where was Dacor founded?
Dacor was founded in Pasadena, California, in 1965.
Where are Dacor appliances made?
This site does not state where individual models are built. Check the rating plate, your owner’s manual or the specification sheet for your exact model.
Are Dacor and Samsung appliances the same?
No. Dacor is a separate brand, and the electronics in current Dacor appliances are built on Samsung platforms. Do not assume a shared part number between a Dacor and a Samsung appliance.
How can I tell which generation of Dacor I own?
Use the model prefix and serial number, not the styling. DOB, DOP, DOC, DTI, DTG and DDW are Samsung-era prefixes; ER30D, ER36D, ER48D, EDW and IDW are Legacy. If you are unsure, bring the full model number when you book a visit.
